For months now I've been saying that time travel will be the key to LOST's big mysteries, and tonight's episode went a long way toward confirming that.
So building on that theory:
--The funeral Jack attended in last season's finale was for one of the operatives who rescued them from the island. (Seeing as how nobody else bothered to show up, Miles seems to be the most likely candidate.) And why did he die? Because he was the first name on Sayid's hit list.
--Time travel is going to be used to explain the fact that Walt has aged four years in a matter of months.
And the big one:
--When Jack tells Kate "We have to go back," he's not talking about going back to the island. He's talking about going back in time.
In other words, something terrible is going to happen on the island, and everybody (except the Oceanic Six) is going to die. So Future Jack's goal isn't to rescue a bunch of stranded castaways; he wants to go back in time and prevent that catastrophic event from happening in the first place.
Just a thought.

My LOST theory...

I think you are dead on that time travel is a HUGE reason things are happening the way they are. Dez being able to manipulate time to save Charlie really made me realize that last season.
Personally, I think the island is in flux -- it goes back and forth in time. Given that belief I am starting to wonder if Sayid isn't Ben's Man on the Boat.
Pure speculation, but fun speculation.
But then why would Jack want the plane to crash every time he flies Oceanic? Survivor's guilt, perhaps?
Time travel would explain some things, but it's such a difficult trick to pull off. But if anyone can, it's the writers. Plus, it would thematically tie into the whole flash-back/flash-forward aspect of the show.
Glad you're on board with the time travel theory. I'm also a big proponent of it largely because I think it will explain Charlie's "I'm dead but I'm also here" comment. I don't think he's a ghost, I think he may have time travelled out of that flooded station like Desmond time travelled when he turned the failsafe key. The two scenes were loaded with similarities -- both taking place in finales, in Dharma stations, both involving Penny, crossing themselves and a heroic act of sacrifice.
If we're right, Charlie will be found to be alive in the future and may even help the others bring real rescue in the end.
The Miles funeral theory also works because when Jack pulls up to the funeral parlor, it is in a lower class black neighborhood and when we are introduced to Miles character in the flashback, he is shown working in Inglewood
Granted they could be lying, but one of the first things the Lost creators denied during the first season was that the mystery had anything to do with time travel.

That was during the David Fury age of the show. Since then it has become Damon's world and he stated to Kristin in May, 2007:
...we were starting to think about what the effect of the second season finale was going to be, with Desmond turning the fail-safe key...And we felt that it would be cool if it involved time travel in some way.
So all bets are off and time/space travel is now a big part of the story.
